Yesterdays Project Manager Is Todays Project Engineer

Employment

The rapid growth of technology, greater exposure to knowledge, higher levels of awareness are making the young project engineer act more and more like a project manager.

What I mean is, todays project engineers are actively supervising new graduates, setting and monitoring schedules & budgets, interacting with clients and so on.

A decade or so ago these duties were undertaken by project managers or supervisors who were promoted to that level largely bacause of seniority. They were promoted regardless of whether it is a right fit for them or not.

Now-a-days young/junior engineers are trusted with more increasing responsibility because of their ability to multitask with the help of cutting edge technology.

This makes me wonder whether the technology is friend or foe to the younger engineers? Younger engineers are stuck with older/outdated titles but their responsibilities are growing and they are expected to do more and produce more.

Younger engineers do the bulk of work and when it comes to the face value with clients and the company's brass, they are getting almost nothing. Could this be the reason why there is a higher turnaround in the companies with larger percentage of younger engineers.

Always Have A Current Resume
What is the biggest mistake people make with resumes?People write their resumes as a chronological summary of everything they've done in their professional lives. Employers only care about one thing: what you can do for them. If they can't quickly get that answer out of your resume, it'll get tossed in the garbage can. An effective resume draws their attention, clearly spells out why you are better than the other candidates, and lands you an interview.Should I use an experienced resume preparer?Yes. Get it done right the first time because once your resume starts circulating, you won't get a chance to go back and clean it up. Frankly, when I work with people on their resumes, I am shocked at what they're sending out. These days, employers keep...(related: Employment)

Sawbones
I was rushing through the white-tented terminal building at Denver International Airport when my attention was diverted ? as if often is -- by a storefront massage business. Checking my wristwatch, I calculated I had just enough time for a 20-minute chair massage.I settled onto the light gray vinyl chair and placed my face inside the cushioned headrest. The massage therapist introduced himself. "I'm Lee," he said. "But you can call me Sawbones."He must have seen the cartoon question mark floating above my head in an imaginary white bubble -"Sawbo...(related: Employment)
