Will The New EU Cookie Laws Be A Problem For Users?

By: Leo Liu

The European Union has a new legislation which will take effect in 2011. It'll make it so that the consumer, which is you, have to agree every time a cookie is placed on your computer. A cookie is a tiny text file which will notify the website regarding your last visit, what you did there, and from time to time additional information like what page that you originated from previously. Sometimes they are utilized for money generating purposes however, many times it's more of a tracking concern enabling a web site to display different material to you as a first time user as opposed to a person who has been there day after day. Most websites these days apply certain kinds of cookies. Could this new law be a pain to computer users?

Consider that you sit down and do a search. Any listing you click on is going to instantly have a big pop up disclaimer stating that you can't visit the web site unless you agree to the cookie. You hit back not sure what this implies. Then the next website does exactly the same and the next. In the end it will remind people of Windows Vista where whenever you needed to install something the admin pop up would show up. Most people who don't know cookies or the regulations will likely be a bit scared to accept cookies because they are unsure if they're harmful like a computer virus or malware.

What would be a superior method of accomplishing this?

A better way will be to inform online users what cookies are and ways to turn them off or perhaps block them entirely within your web browser. A lot of web browsers now have a privacy mode where no cookies are put into the computer and the history of the browser is not saved. Thus giving the consumer the option to either be agreeing to cookies or not without having to have these annoying full-page disclaimers where the consumer have to either allow it or not be able to access the site.
