What Is the Irritable Bowel Syndrome In Kids?

By: Mark Anthony

The colon (large intestine, the place where the stools are stored) is negatively affected in the disorder named Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS.

Since this condition is termed to as syndrome, it is characterized with various symptoms for which the root causes are not known.

Although it is relatively prevalent among Americans, there is still no crucial evidence found that would help produce effective treatments. Lack of research is often thought of as the main reason why there is not enough knowledge concerning Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Due to the fact that IBS is a chronic condition which doesn't pose a threat to the life of patients, the research industry will not allocate the resources necessary to make significant progress. It is postponed and so the level of knowledge is kept lower. Being a functional disorder also doesn't help, because there is no definitive solution that medicine can provide.

Usually when we speak about a functional disorder we think about a subjective feelings and signs which can be measured. For example the pain, there is no damage to be correlated with the pain in Irritable Bowel Syndrome like in ulcer, where there is damage in the intestines that can be seen.

Characteristic to a functional disorder is the fact that a physical manifestation of the condition usually is not present. Only the function of the digestive system is perverted, more specifically the colon. The colon muscles are very sensitive, both in children and in adults, which means that if a substance is introduced that is not tolerated by the system, it can create negative effects.

To explain why there is this lack of knowledge regarding the cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome we have to take into consideration also the several ways it is experienced by patients. We have a diarrhea-dominated Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and we have constipation-dominated IBS. For clarification these types should be studied distinctively.

While the condition is more commonly prevalent among people aged 20 years and above, it is likely that this can also be observed among children. However, the symptoms are milder and usually manifests with minimal symptoms. Often, aggravated diarrhea or constipation is mistaken for Irritable Bowel Syndrome so it is important that once the child is observed with the signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome or any condition closely resembling IBS, doctor's assistance is immediately sought.

The two main symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome among kids are constipation and diarrhea (or the combination of both) and crampy sensation within the abdominal area.

Diarrhea is the abrupt alteration of the bowel movements frequency. Usually, there is also present a powerful urge to eliminate stool, which normally leads to incontinence. We can characterize diarrhea as fluid stool, which in theory should be easier to evacuate. Halfway evacuation could additionally be felt and it is necessary to eliminate right away after the first bowel movement.

For this case, parents are advised to assist in the whole process to avoid complications. Diarrhea can lead to complications like dehydration or loss of substantial water in the body. Please seek medical advice once this is observed.

On the opposite side, constipation is characterized by a compacted and hard stool, which is difficult to evacuate through the anus. To amend this dietary fiber should be added to diet to help form the stool. Whenever constipation is the obvious sign in Irritable Bowel Symptom, the child must be checked to find out if he has gone over bowel movements recently.

You shouldn't panic if your child is diagnosed with IBS. This condition doesn't represent a life threat due to the fact it is not chronic. But, you should take immediate action to treat it as early as possible for best results.
