Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the cells that form the mesothelium, the membrane surrounding the main organs of the body. The fluid released in the peritoneum helps in the smooth functioning of these organs. Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor occurring in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, often associated with exposure to asbestos dust. Mesothelioma diagnosis in this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers transcendently of the spread's internal organs. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the linings surrounding the vital organs such as the lungs, heart or abdomen.

The Pericardial Mesothelioma: When the asbestos fibers start interfering with the mesothelial cells in the pericardial region then the resultant cancer is known as the pericardial mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor involving the mesothelial cells that make up the pleura or lining around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs. The pleura is the membrane that typically surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity, while the peritoneum is the tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The function of pleura and pleural fluid is to reduce friction between the lungs and the inside of the chest wall during breathing. Stage II, III and IV malignant mesotheliomas are advanced, and may have spread to lymph nodes or to surrounding or distant organs and tissues. The plaintiff has been diagnosed with complications resulting from exposure to asbestos.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of this cancer and it affects the lining of the lungs.

Since there are various types of mesothelioma that affect different body parts, it is best if the disease is treated with a team. A pleural mesothelioma may result in lung cancer or pneumothorax but only in severe cases and on the other hand some patients might not exhibit any symptoms at all.

In the abdomen, a cancer of the peritoneum or tissue lining the abdominal cavity and covering various organs is called malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. It tends to be a more invasive form of cancer; patients diagnosed with this disease have a shorter life expectancy than if they had attracted Pleural Mesothelioma. About 20% of all mesotheliomas are Peritoneal Mesothelioma, and they can be of two types: malignant and benign.

Pericardial mesothelioma is a lesser known form of the disease, accounting for less than 10% of all mesothelioma cases, or mesothelioma of the pericardium. Most of the symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are attributed to the accumulation of this fluid since the accumulated fluid interferes with the function of the heart. The main cause for this type of cancer is the inhalation of asbestos fibers which get embedded in the lung linings, also known as the pleura.

Because it is so rare, there is little specific research on this disease, and it is still not clearly understood how the asbestos fibers become lodged in the pericardium. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year in the United States alone. Pleural Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is most often found in people who have, at some point during their lives been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Because of its aggressive spread, you should contact your doctor as soon as you begin to suspect mesothelioma, especially if you have been exposed to asbestos at some point.
