Troubleshooting Your Cable Box In Easy Steps

By: Jerry Rogers

For customers of digital cable services that are going through momentary issues with their cable service such as a blank screen, static or snowy screen, there is sound but no picture or vice versa, there are a few things you are able to check first before calling your local cable supplier. You don’t need to be an experienced techie to do simple troubleshooting and hopefully resolve your own dilemma.

For starters the very first thing you should try if you are dealing with problems with your cable television service is to check your cable television box. You want to be sure it is securely plugged into the outlet. I can certify that a lot of people never peek behind the television to check if the cable box is plugged in. Many times the reason for this is because there is a tight space behind the tv and the average person cannot reach nor see behind if the cable box is plugged in. This is just a simple fact. Isn’t it very awkward when you call up your local cable television source and have a word with their customer service department and they give you the same advice and to figure out the plug is not in the outlet? Do yourself a favor and check before making the call.

Another simple fix to cable problems is possibly the tv is on the wrong channel. Many televisions that use cable television boxes are set on channel three or four however if someone else takes the wireless remote or by accident sits on it and the channel gets changed then that would set off some difficulties such as a blank screen, sound with no image, and more. Be sure to check that the cable channel is fixed on the right channel preferably channel 3 or 4 for the cable services to work.

Check to make sure all the cables stretching from the cable box to the television, the vcr to the cable box, the video game system to the tv, and other like situations are securely connected to their destinations. If you can squeeze behind your tv look to see if any of the connections are loose. If they are then simply tighten them. After being sure they are snug you next want to ensure they are fixed in the correct places. In most families there is someone that knows how where each connection behind the tv goes. If you are not that individual then find the person that is sure.

Once you have checked each and every one of your connections and you’re certain they are tight fitting and accurate the next step you can undertake is turning off your cable television box which will involve unplugging it and afterward doing a restart. From experience cable technicians will instruct you to leave the box off for around 10 seconds or so. Plug the cable television box back in the outlet and turn it on. More times than not these basic steps will fix common problems but if they don't at the moment it's a good idea to start over and redo them. These basic steps are worth the attempt and will save you a long wait time on the phone as you are looking to converse to customer service.
