Travel Insurance 101

By: maryna ccauley

Blessed with what is surely the best health care system in the world, Canadians typically give little thought to the possibility of future illness. Preparations are necessary if they will travel outside Canada but within the country it is alright not to think of it as much. Financial hardship as well as real emotional and psychological stress are some of the things that you may need to deal with if you experience sudden illnesses or injury even in the United States. As a result, a number of mature travelers have deemed it necessary to have enough comprehensive global health insurance before leaving Canada.

Aside from knowing where to get insurance, several readers want to know when their health insurance is enough. Especially for those traveling to the U.S.or Europe, provided is a comprehensive package at a reasonable cost according to the manager of Winnipeg's major bank but this is not intended to replace total health coverage.

In terms of the older card members, in order to supplement these benefits they may need to get another insurance package. According to two major insurance companies that scale their packages, there are more claims from long stays and from people over 60 and so what you should have is travel health insurance of at least $1 million. One company set their limit to extending their maximum coverage to those between 60 and 65 because of certain costs.

Considering that travelers may need some help in finding the right insurance health plan, they can ask for it. What a travel agent can give you is information on the larger companies but an insurance agent can provide you with a comprehensive overview. As well as the length of stay, one major insurance company bases its rates on a person's age, under 60 or over 61. Considering a single traveler under 60, coverage for a 10 day trip would amount to about $9.10 while a person over 61 will pay around $17.

Similar packages for 30 days away would cost $23.50 for someone under 60 and $67 for a traveler over that age. With a 48 day trip, the coverage will amount to as much as $95 and $220 respectively. The cost increases with the length of the trip. $540 in total or about $270 per person is the expense that will be incurred for a comprehensive health insurance package by a couple over 60 who plans to be away for two months and it will rise to $1,350 if they decide to extend it to four months.

What was done by a Winnipeg couple was to make the rates for long term health insurance work for them. They get two 60 day coverage plans instead of purchasing 120 day health packages for the four months they spend in the southern states every year. Options that are less expensive are being provided by this well known insurance company. Dependent on age are the scales of another company but their offerings come at substantially lower rates. Costing $330 is a sixty day coverage for a couple over 65. What several insurance policies come with is a disclaimer for any medical condition which commenced prior to the effective date of the policy wherein the contract will not provide you with the necessary coverage.

There are some companies offering coverage that take effect after those from various credit card plans expire. Purchasing insurance for the entire duration of your trip will be advised by a number of companies. There are some plans where age is not an issue and these are often less expensive than the rest. For these kinds of plans, coverage is not always provided if a trip last over 60 days. There is a company that may be able to help you by giving a money saving tip that can help you offset the costs of health insurance for when you travel. Remember that the travel health premium can be included in medical expenses and included in your tax credit calculation for income tax purposes.
