Top Techniques to Survive Interview Anxiety

By: William Wright

Are you anxious before interviews? You’re not alone. Whether it’s your first interview with a company or your fifth, being ready for anything can make a world of difference. As with anything, practice makes perfect. Read on if you would like to rid yourself of interview anxiety in no time.

Practice may make perfect, but most people don’t want to spend a heck of a lot of time developing interview techniques. It might be time if you’re getting interviews but not being invited back. With all the different types of interview questions, how can you be prepared? If you don’t know how to answer open ended, behavioral, situational, problem, and results based questions, are you really prepared?

Working with a coach you’ll gain the ability to answer the tough questions without stumbling over yourself. And, through one-on-one practice sessions, you’ll be over your anxiety. If you’re tired of knowing for sure they’re not going to call you back, it’s time to increase your chances of being invited in for a second interview.

Can you practice with your friend? Of course. It’s a start at the very least. Your goal is to become very comfortable with the interview process. Practice answering questions but don’t practice so long that you sound scripted.

Have some stories to tell. Your stories should be about your accomplishments – especially those that are related to the job for which you are applying. A good method to remember when answering your question is the STAR method, and talk about the situation, the tasks, your actions, and the result. Time yourself because you want to stay between about 45 seconds and two minutes. Here's an example:

In my role as Vice President of Fantastic Projects at Outer Banks Ltd., I inherited a high profile project that was far behind schedule and nearly over budget. I worked with my team to get the project back on track. I set rigorous objectives and monitored activities regularly. I implemented a system using Magician 7.0 that utilized a shared time line/project calendar and monitored tasks, issues, and resources related to each project. The team did an excellent job of tracking, prioritizing, managing, and executing each project to successful completion. We came in under budget. And, my clients were so happy with the turnaround that I generated 35% in new business through client referrals in 2008.

To be rid of your interview anxiety for good, you’re going to need to answer the tough questions and support everything on your resume. Figure out what questions trigger your anxiety and work on those with your coach – you’ll be able to easily answer the questions you used to dread.

If you’re not getting called back for second interviews, partner with an interview coach to learn how to effectively present yourself. Don’t worry - it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. This is an affordable investment. If you’re ready to succeed in your next interview, it’s time to call a coach. You’ll eliminate interview anxiety and land your ideal job in no time.
