There are advantages to eating more fruits and vegetables.

By: Carl Reeves

Everyone is aware of the fact that fruits and veggies are excellent for the body, due to their abundance of fiber and disease-fighting nutrients. Mom always told us to eat our vegetables and we all know we should eat more of them but do we listen?

Not if you're like most of us, you didn't. Look around you. We're all sitting on vats of grease. We go out for lunch and we literally pour saturated fat down our throats in the form of burgers and fries. We polish that off and suck down a yummy chocolate milkshake. All this is accomplished from the driver's seat of our car as we guide the car with the only finger we haven't dipped into our french fry grease. It may be an exaggeration to say we eat fast food on the fly for lunch everyday , but we do quite often reach for fast, convenient, and satisfying things like an Oreo cookie from the cookie jar, instead of taking a moment to prepare something that might actually be nutritious.

If it's simple you want, why not try some watermelon, grapes, or a cantaloupe? Fruits are the original fast food. Give them a quick bath and you can start noshing right away. There are also vegetables like celery, carrots, and cauliflower that are quick to prepare and can be enhanced with a yogurt dip or a vinaigrette dressing. Research has shown that we don't eat enough of the low-calorie, wholesome broccoli and brussels sprouts, and so we are overweight and disease-prone. As motivation they came up with a five day campaign designed to remind us to be more aware of our eating habits and provide a challenge for us to eat five servings a day or fruits and vegetables.

I know. Right now it seems like a plethora to suddenly begin eating five whole servings every single day. You're thinking, 'There's no way. I can't do it.' But you can. You just need to take small steps. Including fruit in your breakfast is one easy way to increase your intake in a practical manner. Having cereal? Toss in some fruit. Cooking up a batch of flapjacks or waffles? Throw in some blueberries or bananas, or even some strawberries. Yummy! And a wonderful snack can be had from an apple or a banana.

At lunchtime, it's easy to include vegetables in your menu. A great idea is to choose a salad for your lunch. Or order a healthier sandwich that has lots of vegetable toppings. If you're baking, you can sneak in vegetables and never even realize it. If you're making a sauce or a soup, you can load up on vegetables. Cook up a batch of stew, and lay on the vegetables.

Celery or apples with peanut butter on top makes a great snack and it is very kid friendly. Since kids never seem to like anything for longer than a day anyway, simply make sure to offer them various foods. The saying 'eat your vegetables before you get dessert' is a method that just seems to make vegetables more unappetizing. How would the public's ideas about veggies change if we said just the opposite.

You can have some vegetables after you finish your dessert? Drinking juices are another way people can consume more daily fruits and vegetables. There is usually no fiber in fruit juices, however. And in many cases, children will drink their fill of juice and not have any appetite left for their meals. And juices are higher in calories than the whole fruits or vegetables.

There are numerous benefits to your health when you eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. It's getting harder and harder to pretend you don't know about them. Researchers contend that those consuming more fruits and vegetables are approximately half as likely to get fourteen various kinds of adult cancer than those eating but one or two servings each day. Not only that, eating more fruits and vegetables can lower your likelihood of having a heart attack, a stroke, or developing blindness.

We've all heard this and probably recognize the truth of it, but we still make up a million and one excuses for not eating right. Some people claim fruit takes too long to slice on their cereal and besides, vegetables and fruits are expensive to keep in stock at home. What excuse keeps you from eating the way you know you should?
