The Advantage of Holding a Student Credit Card

By: Joe Belucci

If you are a full-time student, chances are that on a regular day, you don't have admission to a lot of cash. It can be tough to have a full-time job, or a high paying job while you're going to school. You've got to make good grades now so you can make the big money someday. But, in the mean time you're strapped for cash. Most of the time, you don't need a lot of money, but you do need to have a support plan in case an unlucky issue pops. Your auto might break, or you might not have sufficient cash to pay for your books. You might even have to make trip to the hospital, and even if you have insurance, sometimes you're required to pay a certain fee to receive care. For all of these situations, it serves to have a credit card available. Credit cards can be a safety net for a student who doesn't have ready access to funds in the case of an emergency or unexpected event.

Student credit cards can be, and are often exploited. But they can be used responsibly, and are often a inevitable part of college living. In order to use your student credit card responsibly, make a pact with yourself that you will not use the card to pay for unneeded purchases like meals out, the latest CDs and fashions, and impulse buys. Sometimes, though, a credit card can help you feed yourself at the end of a particularly tight month, or if you need to buy a presentable outfit for an interview. Credit cards can be used to pay for requirements, but try to pay outstanding balances off as soon as possible, or you'll be paying a lot more later.
