Take The Declutter Challenge, and Finally See Results!!

By: Marlee Dorst

It's another month, another week, another day... and it is time to begin the Declutter Challenge! Wouldn't it be good to be able to return home to a clean, tidy, peaceful home? Imagine the fun of cooking in a kitchen where all of your utensils are in their correct places, and where your counters glisten and beg to be filled with home made cookies as opposed to clutter? Take A Declutter Challenge today! What exactly is a Declutter Challenge, you ask? Simply put, it is a challenge you offer yourself (and/or your family and friends) to get a big part of your house clutter-free in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!

The One Week Declutter Challenge

This particular kind of challenge will call for you to assign one entire week to your challenge. This will be a serious "no one can distract me" week throughout which you clear your schedule with the objective of reclaiming what once wsa your clutter-free house. Assign yourself one area of the house for each day, lock yourself inside it so to speak, and go nuts! Garbage bins, boxes for donations and for consignment shops, and certainly some good old cleaning supplies are your necessities. Pull your spouse, your room-mate, or your kids into the challenge! Remember, many hands make light work!
Perhaps you will see the need to scale back and give yourself a One Week Kitchen Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Basement Declutter Challenge. No worries! By committing yourself for seven days (and really, what is 7 days in the scheme of things), and you will without a doubt bring order back to at least part of your chaotic house!

The 2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge

This kind of Declutter Challenge is a very popular one this year. Commit yourself to decluttering (by donating, selling, or throwing out) 2010 things in the year 2010. Does that sound impossible? If you do the math though, it really is not as bad as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is merely 5.5 items daily. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard in the basement, your bedroom, the work shop... that makes it seem more reasonable now, does it? Record your success on your calendar, and watch the clutter vanish!
Yet one more way one could do the 2010 Declutter Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... Quite a bit until you consider that there are 8,760 hours in one year! It is less than one 45 minute session per week! However, 2010 minutes is sufficient to get a LOT clutter-free!

The 30 Day Declutter Challenge

The final type of challenge is labeled the 30 Day Declutter Challenge, and the idea is that on every one of the 30 days of the month you declutter one object or part of your house, large or small. The objects can vary from the top shelf in your pantry cupboard to the toy bin in your son's bedroom, from your junk drawer to the gift wrap bin that gets stuffed in the spare room closet. The most important thing is to be sensible with your task assignment. Writing "put photos collected the previous 2 years into albums" almost certainly won't be able to be accomplished in a single day, but possibly "sort out the photographs into piles or envelopes by the occasion or child and get rid of photos you won't want to keep" CAN be finished!
After your tasks are assigned, think about giving yourself a reward to look ahead to after your 30 Day Challenge ends successfully! Yes, having a much less cluttered home will be a reward in itself, you most likely know that we put in more effort if we have something extra to win from our hard work!

So, the "One Week Declutter Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge", and the the "30 Day Declutter Challenge"... three fantastic ways to start decluttering your home! Which challenge will you do?
