Take A Declutter Challenge!

By: Marlee Dorst

Yet ANOTHER month has gone by... and it's time to take the Decluttering Challenge! Wouldn't you love to be able to return home to a spotless, tidy, peaceful home? Imagine the joy of cooking in a kitchen where all your utensils are in their correct spots, and where your countertops glisten and beg to be filled with home made cookies instead of clutter? Take A Declutter Challenge today! Unsure what a Declutter Challenge is? It put it simply, it's a challenge you assign yourself (and/or your siblings and friends) to get a huge part of your home clutter-free in a particular time frame. And it WORKS!

The 30 Day Decluttering Challenge

One type of challenge is called the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge, and the concept is that on all of the 30 days of the month you decluttering one thing or area of your house, great or little. The items can range from the top shelf in your pantry closet to your son's old sports equipment in your work shop, from your junk drawer to the kraft supply kit that gets hidden in the spare room closet. The most important thing is to be realistic with your chore assignment. Putting "put photos taken in the last 3 years into albums" most likely won't be able to be done in a single evening, but possibly "organize the pictures into piles or envelopes by the event or person and dispose of photographs you won't want to keep" COULD be completed!
Once your chores are assigned, consider giving yourself a reward to look forward to after your 30 Day Challenge ends victoriously! Yes, having a decluttered house will be a reward in itself, you most likely know that we have a tendency to put in more energy if we have something tangible to gain from our efforts!

The One Week Decluttering Challenge

A different kind of challenge will require you to reserve one whole week to your project. This will be a serious "no distractions allowed" week throughout which you empty your schedule in order to reclaiming what used to be your decluttered home. Assign yourself one area of the house for each day, lock yourself within it so to speak, and go crazy! Garbage bins, bins for donations and for consignment shops, and of course some good ole' cleaning supplies are going to be your necessities. Pull your significant other, your friends, or your family into the challenge! Remember, many hands make light work!
Perhaps you'll need to scale back and assign yourself a One Week Office Decluttering Challenge, or a One Week Basement Decluttering Challenge. Don't worry about it! By committing yourself for seven days (and really, what is 7 days in the scheme of things), and you will no doubt bring order back to at least part of your chaotic home!

The 2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge

This kind of Decluttering Challenge is a favorite. Commit yourself to decluttering (by throwing out, donating, or selling) 2010 things in the year 2010. Sounds impossible? If you do the math though, it really is not as crazy as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is only 5.5 things per day. Look around you... your junk drawer, the cupboard under the stairs, your office, the storage shed... that seems not so unreasonable now, does it? Keep track by ticking it off on the calendar or somewhere handy, and see the clutter melt away!
One more way you could do the 2010 Decluttering Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That is 33.5 hours.... A whole lot until you remember that there are actually 8,760 hours in one year! This is not even one 45 minute session per week! However, 2010 minutes is enough to get a LOT decluttered!

So, the "30 Day Decluttering Challenge", the "One Week Decluttering Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge"... three amazing ways to begin decluttering your home! Which one are you going to do?
