Take A Declutter Challenge, and Finally Get Clutter-Free!!

By: Marlee Dorst

It's a new year, a new week, a new day... and it's time to start the Declutter Challenge! Wouldn't you love to be able to return home to a clean, orderly, peaceful house? Imagine the joy of working in a kitchen where all your utensils are where they should be, and where your countertops sparkle and beg to be filled with home made cookies as opposed to clutter? Take A Declutter Challenge right now! What exactly is a Declutter Challenge, you ask? Simply put, it's a challenge you give yourself (and/or your siblings and friends) to get a huge part of your house decluttered in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!

The One Week Declutter Challenge

A different kind of challenge will need you to reserve one entire week to your challenge. This will be a genuine "no distractions allowed" week throughout which you clear out your schedule in order to reclaiming what once wsa your clutter-free house. Every day, pick one area, lock yourself within it so to speak, and go nuts! Garbage bins, bins for donations and re-sell, and certainly some good ole' cleaning supplies are your must-haves. Pull your significant other, your friends, or your kids along for the ride! The more the merrier!
Perhaps you'll see the need to cut back and give yourself a One Week Bedroom Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Spare Room Declutter Challenge. No worries! If you commit to decluttering for 7 days (and seriously, what is seven days in the scheme of things), and you will definitely bring order back to at least part of your chaotic home!

The 2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge

This category of Declutter Challenge is a popular one. Commit yourself to decluttering (by throwing out, donating, or selling) 2010 things during the year 2010. Does that sound like way to much? If you do the math though, it is not as crazy as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is only 5.5 things daily. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard under the stairs, your recroom, the storage shed... that makes it seem more reasonable now, does it? Tick off your success on your calendar, and see the clutter melt away!
Yet one more way one can do the 2010 Declutter Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That is 33.5 hours.... A great deal until you remember that there are 8,760 hours in one year! It's not even one 45 minute session per week! However, 2010 minutes is sufficient to get a LOT clutter-free!

The 30 Day Declutter Challenge

The final type of challenge is known as the 30 Day Declutter Challenge, and the concept is that on each of the 30 days of the month you declutter one thing or section of your house, great or small. The objects can range from the bottom shelf in your bedroom closet to the media centre in your den, from your junk drawer to the gift wrap bin that gets stuffed in the spare room closet. The key is to be reasonable with your chore assignment. Writing "put pictures collected the previous 3 years into photo-albums" almost certainly won't be able to be accomplished in one evening, but perhaps "sort the pictures into piles or envelopes by the event or child and throw out of photographs you won't need to keep" CAN be done!
After your chores have been assigned, think about giving yourself a reward to look ahead to once your 30 Day Challenge ends victoriously! Yes, it will likely be rewarding enough to see your decluttered home, but it's an undeniable truth that we have a tendency to put in more effort if we have something tangible to win from our pains!

So, the "One Week Declutter Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge", and the the "30 Day Declutter Challenge"... three amazing ways to begin decluttering your house! Which challenge are you going to do?
