Shopping for an inexpensive Guitar - Is it Worth It?

By: Steve Miller

A lot folks think low-cost guitars as bad quality, poorly manufactured electric guitar. In fact, some people will be intimidated by the fact that it was not a American made electric guitar. You may not even consider Chinese or Korean crafted guitars and may never buy a cheap electric guitar, until now.

Many big guitar makers have already started selling their guitars in India, China and Korea to offer more inexpensive guitars for the common guitarist. Not everybody can afford a $1500+ Fender or Gibson guitars and there is a large market for low-cost electric guitars under $500.

A majority of the Epiphone inexpensive electric guitar models which are owned by Gibson are now produced in Korea. Kramer, which is another company owned by Gibson produces most of their cheap instruments in Korea and China as well. Fender bought Jackson some years back, and now most of the Jackson electric guitars are produced in India and Korea. BC Rich inexpensive guitars and many Ibanez electric guitar models are crafted in Korea as well.

The cheap of labor may help the production of less expensive guitar, but that alone cannot be the only reason for lowering electric guitar prices.

So, why are some electric guitars dirt cheap and other electric guitars are significantly costly?

There are many factors determining a electric guitar value.

The number one factor for making a guitar expensive or cheap is the actual electric guitar manufacturing procedure. Was the electric guitar hand-crafted or was it manufactured in a automated modern guitar manufacturing facility? Hand-built electric guitars are usually more expensive, while the guitars coming out of an automated factory are typically cheaper since the highly automated manufacturing procedure does not require much physical work like electric guitar building, quality control factor which will determine a guitar price. Is the quality of the material used for crafting this guitar of the best quality? This will comprise of the woods used for the instrument body and neck, the paints and finishes. Cheaper guitars use cheap woods like plywood for building the guitar's body, while more expensive guitars use high quality woods like mahogany, rosewood or alder.

The third factor for making a electric guitar expensive or cheap is the quality of electronics and hardware that go in the electric guitar. Cheap guitars usually have inexpensive bridge, tuners, and standard pickups. Expensive electric guitars are made with better quality electronics and hardware. For instance the price of a single Seymour Duncan pickup may be a much higher price than the stock guitar pickup made in Korea.

Cheap Guitars - Is it worth it to purchase one?

It actually depends. Not everyone will bond with a cheap instrument. If you are pro guitarist and the electric guitar is your tool of trade, then you probably will not wish to purchase a cheap electric guitar. Although most cheap instruments these days have a very excellent quality, professional artists prefer hand-built instruments created by professional luthiers.

If you do not want to splurge several thousands of dollars on a Fender Stratocaster of Gibson Les Paul, then you may want to have a look at less expensive electric guitars. Keep in mind that cheap guitars are no longer no-name instruments. You can still buy Jackson, ESP, Ibanez, Fernandes, BC Rich, Squier, Epiphone, and several other renowned guitar brands for less than $200!

I bought a cheap guitar built in Korea by Epiphone for just $150. The guitar features a licensed Floyd Rose tremolo, a very good, fast neck and great sound. This electric guitar puts the "cheap" and "quality" in one sentence. My inexpensive axe is worth much more than what I paid for it, and it's actually as good quality than some American made Fenders I have played.

Would you rather purchase the cheapest American built Fender Strat model for $500 or would you rather buy a Chinese built Jackson, with Duncan Designed pickups, super fast neck and a Floyd Rose Tremolo system for $300? This conclusion of cheap / expensive instrument is all yours.
