By: trisha articlulis

Astounded? You should be. Piranhas are fish with some of the lowest PR in the planet. These guys are always exposed on Television and films as being voracious man eaters. Ever turn on the Animal Planet and watched them dispose of some unfortunate animal, and you'd know what I mean. As opposed to the large oppressor of the sea - the Shark, Piranhas are small fish that show aggression in large numbers and embark upon a huge feeding binge. They pretty much eat anything that gets in their way. They are close members of the Tetra family and are similar in form to their cousins - the Pacu fish. In school, I had buddy who had a big Piranha aquarium and I have been fascinated by them ever since. Unluckily, these fish are banned in many regions and for good reason. They should only be kept by practiced and responsible enthusiasts.

Piranhas are available in lots of different varieties, the most popular of which are the Pygocentrus Nattereri or the red bellied Piranha. In case you are considering keeping these fish, you should supply them with at least a fifty gallon aquarium in which to thrive. Keep in mind that they are warm water fish. You'll need some form of temperature control mechanism in your aquarium. They need the water temperature to be between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. You should also think about providing them with a biowheel and 1.5-2 inches of aquarium gravel.

If you live in the West, and happen to live in an area where Piranha are legal, then you can almost certainly acquire your food at the area pet store. Mature Piranha will eat just about anything so you can give them pieces of Chicken, Fish or Beef as their main protein. They can be fed freeze fried veggies and fruits. You possibly can even add some fresh salad every now and again. Piranhas are likely to gulp down food almost immediately after it's thrown into their aquarium and so any food left over after a couple of minutes is probably going to be disregarded. This left over food can easily sully your tank and should therefore be removed immediately. Piranhas should ideally be fed once a day.

Because of the earlier mentioned difficulty with left over food dirtying up your aquarium, additionally it is imperative that you have a good filtration system. A first rate filter will go a long way to keep your aquarium in good shape. Another note on food, please do not try and feed your Piranha your pet Goldfish. they are not very nutritious and carry serious health conditions.

A lot of places have made keeping Piranhas prohibited because people have insisted on testing their nerve and idiocy one too many times. If you decide to stick a hand inside a Piranha aquarium, you have to expect it to get bitten off. It really is true that laws are made to protect people from themselves. Piranhas, therefore, have a bad name for no reason other than that they are instinctive animals. Whereas, young Piranhas tend to school together, grown-up Piranhas are more loners. They love to hide and chill out in their dens frequently in and around your assorted ornaments and decorations. So guarantee that your aquarium ornaments shouldn't have sharp edges where a Piranha might hurt itself. Remember, these are wild animals and deserve your respect. Don't even think about keeping them as pets if you have no idea what you are doing or are susceptible to rash behavior. Lets respect all nature's creatures.
