Mariah Carey - Emancipation of MIMI Review

By: Selena James Smith

Mariah Carey is one of those people that everyone in the world knows, for better or worse. She is arguably as famous as anyone on the planet; her impact on music is beaten only by the likes of the late Michael Jackson.

But Mariah reached her peak in the 90s with hits like Honey, Fantasy and Dreamlover, and question marks were raised as to Carey's ability to be relevant in the new millennium as her 2001 effort and soundtrack to her equally derided film Glitter, flopped. (Although since this album has nonetheless gone on to sell over 3 million copies worldwide.)

Queue Emancipation of MIMI, Mariah's comeback album. She took over the charts as if nothing had happened with hits such as Like That and We Belong Together, dominating the number 1 spots just like in the old days. And with the blistering start to the album, you can see why. Sure, the music style has changed dramatically, never more apparent than producer Jermaine Dupri in the background, but the album starts with hits, nothing but the hits. Like That is a rather generic, but catchy party track masterfully crafted to appeal to the youth of the new millennium; We Belong Together is a lovely, heartfelt ballad which transformed into massive chart success, and Shake It Off is a catchy, yet thankfully unique and upbeat breakup tune.

Unfortunately the strong start is not sustained. The album is mediocre and generic until better cuts such as One and Only featuring the beautifully flowing Twista, as well as the sweet and sassy Your Girl, come to shine some light on the disc once again. However, that doesn't last long, because, once again, the rest is mediocre perhaps with the exception of the beautiful Don't Forget About Us.

In conclusion, Mariah Carey did make a very strong comeback with The Emancipation of MIMI, but this was based on the strength of her singles more than the meat and potatoes of her album, which, despite its excellent sales, wallowed in only average territory.
