Justin Bieber My World Review

By: Selena James Smith

I first saw Justin Bieber on a short, modest video on Youtube singing 'With You' by Chris Brown. How times change. Within a couple of years, extremely rich and famous Brown has now been relegated to D list status after his assault on Rihanna, and Justin Bieber on the other hand has seen his singing career skyrocketed to the heavens after being discovered by Usher, and fought over between the 'Nice and Slow' singer and Justin Timberlake, of all people. Signed to Island Records in 2008, Bieber, the son of a modestly paid single mother, now travels the world singing for thousands of adoring fans, shooting videos and doing high profile interviews. What a difference a couple of years can make.

The album 'My World', supposedly the first part of a double series (the second released in March 2010) is very short. Only 8 tracks are on this album yet consumers are expected to pay the full price for an album, and also purchase 'My World 2.0' if they want to complete the set. There were obviously commercial benefits to doing it this way, but I can't help but think that the first album is far too short. It just doesn't feel like a full album at all, and more like a large EP.

The songs on 'My World' are at best very good, to very mediocre, at worst. The first single 'One Time' is an upbeat pop-R&B track: it's a feel good song about "Me + You", and just as Youtube user Pruane2Forever rightly pointed out, the fact that Bieber says "Me + You" about a million times on the song directly contradicts the title of the song. I think Justin Bieber is funny in this way; he's only 16 years old and sometimes forgets the lyrics of his songs in his live performances, even though he only has an EP's worth to remember. For millions of dollars I think he should do better, but there is something cute about that too.

The second track, 'Favorite Girl' is really nice, but gets old quickly. Do you ever get songs which sound really great the first few times you listen, then get REALLY old and you get sort of numbed towards them, and you just wish you could erase your memory to listen to it again, fresh? That's exactly what I get from this track. 'Down to Earth' is a song that Bieber wrote himself with assistance, and it's one of the most meaningful and moving pieces on the album. 'One Less Lonely Girl' is possibly the best song on the album in terms of melody, even though the content is as always, with the exception perhaps of 'Down to Earth', very lame. 'First Dance' is nice, but a blatant rip of Michael Jackson's 'You Are Not Alone' , much like a lot of Justin Bieber's material: it sounds like I have heard it before somewhere, but I can't quite pinpoint when, exactly. Except 'First Dance' of course, which is just so blatant I am surprised they haven't been sued by MJ's estate yet. Oh, and Justin Bieber's MJ tributes on Youtube were distinctly lame. The King of Pop deserves better, a lot better. But JB is only 16 so we will forgive him.

'My World' ends with the nice ballad 'Common Denominator' but once again the melodies sound quite recycled. Overall, Justin Bieber is a great singer and he is being given perfect material by his record label, to exploit the millions upon millions of young female fans who need simple, easy to process love songs. Until Justin gets out of the shadow of his record label and begins to develop creative direction of his own, we will likely see more of this kind of pop R&B, recycled music in the meantime. That's not necessarily a bad thing - it makes money, so if it ain't broke...

Overall: 6.5/10 Decent
