How You Can Keep Father Time At A Distance?

By: Gen Wright

The very first physical sign of the aging process is something that we really don't see straight away. It is a loss of muscle tissue starting slowly from the mid 20's and accelerating rapidly after age 50.

Most people may notice a slight drop in strength as the body weakens. Tasks and activities that were once easy become more difficult and energy levels decline. There is usually little change in body weight or body size because body fat usually accumulates and hides the loss of muscle tissue.

For the last 40 odd years we have been told we need to make sure we do enough 'cardio' type activity such as walking, jogging or cycling. But the problem is these types of activity do not protect from muscle loss and joints that ache and don't work well. Without the support and cushioning of strong muscles joints have to take the full brunt of the load of everyday movement.

And then there is bone loss because the muscles are attached to our bones and without the pulling of vigorous muscular activity there is no reason for them to remain strong. They become weak and brittle (osteoporosis) and the risk of fractures increase that can lead to a lifetime of disability.

But the good news is strength training exercise can reverse muscle weakness and bone loss. Proper exercise that works the muscular system is the single most important thing you can do to avoid the acceleration of the aging process caused by disuse. Studies have shown that with a little as twelve months of strength training the clock had been stopped on muscle and bone loss.

The participants in one of the studies regained muscle tissue and bone and became stronger and in most cases stronger that they were when they were young. Balance and flexibility were improved and they became leaner and trimmer without changing what they ate. It was estimated that they became 15 to 20 years more youthful. This research proved beyond doubt that it was simply inactivity that causes our muscles and bone to deteriorate and not the aging process as we once believed.

Although you cannot build new muscle cells you can build up remaining cells which is enough to keep you strong and fit for the rest of your life. A proper strength training program performed just 2-3 times each week slows muscle and bone loss and slows the weakening of tendons and restores joints so they can do their job without pain.

An added benefit is the boosting effect on your metabolism (your body's engine) offsetting the decline as we age. This will give you the advantage of being able to burn a lot more calories without gaining weight. These benefits all add up to improved overall health and wellness and all it takes is a commitment to a proper exercise program.

But it must be maintained for life. Stop for any length of time and your strength and energy will wane, your joints will deteriorate and Father Time will start to catch up faster than is necessary. Keep strong and you will keep him at bay.
