How Much of a Krill Oil Dose Should You Take or Is Fish Oil a Better Choice

By: milton haslam

In the past few months more consumers have been researching omega 3 krill oil supplements. There are several companies offering these products but they have two things in common - high prices and a low krill oil dose per capsule.
A brief digression. When people talk about krill oil dose, what they really mean is the omega 3 dose - in particular - EPA and DHA. This dynamic duo is endorsed by the A.H.A., the Arthritis Foundation, the Eye Institute, the Alzheimer's Association and numerous other North American, South American, European and Asian agencies.
There are so many endorsements because many health professionals believe that omega 3 deficiencies are the biggest nutritional problem that we face.
Omega 3s start their ocean journey in micro algae and plankton. Next up the food chain are small shrimp like creatures called krill. We then move on up to salmon, mackerel and other oily predatory fish. A good rule of thumb is: omega 3s increase up the predatory ladder. Unfortunately, so does the absorption of ocean pollutants.
Three things to keep in mind. The EPA and DHA are the same nutrients, no matter where they come from. It is the dosage that is relevant. Ocean toxins like arsenic, mercury, PCBs and dioxins are important.
How does this affect us?
Companies who make krill supplements claim that being at the bottom of the food chain keeps the contaminants low. They also say that the low krill oil dose does not matter because theirs is more absorbable. What they mean is that their bioavailability is higher because the oil is in a phospholipid form, which is better absorbed by the body than the triglyceride form of most fish supplements.
Both these statements are true if you are comparing them to mediocre fish products. Fish supplements have come a long way in the past decade. The best ones are pollutant free and can prove it with independent lab reports. Plus, they are not in the triglyceride form and are just as absorbable by the body as any omega 3 product out there.
Concerning the krill oil dose, it’s low. The supplement that I use has six times, I repeat, 6 times more EPA and DHA than the best selling krill product. It is just as free of pollutants, just as absorbable, contains more antioxidants and does not endanger any species of fish.
Oh yes, the price is much lower.
