History Summer Concerts at Newmarket Nights

By: Sean Reynolds

A summer concert with a difference! That is what the 2010 Newmarket Nights line up has to offer. Enjoy an evening of fast paced racing action followed by a live set from your favourite band or solo artist.

Newmarket's summer racecourse is about to begin its 23rd year of hosting The Newmarket Nights. Held on their beautiful July Course, the Newmarket Nights are an irresistible cocktail of adrenalin-fuelled racing action. A unique evening with the chance to have a small flutter on the horses, enjoy a refreshing glass of iced cold beer, champagne or Pimms, and a pulsating open air concert by your favourite band or artist.
Racing gets underway at approximately 6pm and finishes around 9pm, (during the latter part of the summer, these times become earlier) with the concert staring around 20 minutes after the last race. The stage is located within the Premier Enclosure and access from the other enclosures is granted once the races have concluded.

Recently redeveloped at a cost of £10 million the venue boasts a wide array of food outlets and bars that remain open until the encore has played. With the romantic surroundings and sizzling atmosphere the July Course is a spectacular venue, making Newmarket Nights a winner for a summer night out.

Over the years, Newmarket has played host to a number of chart-topping acts. The 2008 season kicked off with Bryan Adams taking to the July Course stage. That same summer saw Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra appear for a 12th consecutive year. In 2009 The Pussycat Dolls appeared at Newmarket as a part of the European leg of their Doll Domination Tour. Simply Red, Status Quo and Scouting for Girls were also in town that summer. Simply Red are back again this year as part of their final set of concerts before the band go their separate ways.

With the excitement of the races and live music from the headlining acts, previous Newmarket Nights events have sold out quickly and this year looks to be no different.
With the unbeatable hospitality and unique venue the summer concert season at Newmarket Racecourse is not to be missed.

Madness History

After stints as The Invaders and Morris and the Minors, Madness finally settled on a name and a seven man line up in 1979. An early performance on Top of the Pops and a tour with fellow 2 Tone maestros The Specials help to launch them to the front of the British music scene just in time for the 80s to get underway.

The release of the bands second album Absolutely in 1980 left us with some of their most memorable tunes such as Baggy Trousers and Embarrassment. The band split in the September of 1986 citing 'musical differences' and fans had to wait 6 years for the band to put aside those differences and play to over 75,000 fans at the Madstock! Reunion concert in London's Finsbury Park.

Madness line up; Suggs (Lead Vocals), Cathal Smyth (Backing vocals, dancing), Lee Thompson (Saxophone, backing vocals), Mike Barson (Keyboards, piano, vibraphone), Chris Foreman (Guitar), Mark Bedford (Bass Guitar) and Daniel Woodgate (Drums, percussion)
