Get Up and Get Moving Our Lifestyle is Killing Us

By: Aubrey Moulton

Perhaps the explanation for our clothes sizes increasing is because of our work and entertainment choices. Thanks to technological advances the majority of us spend our time in front of a computer. A new poll from the Institute for Medicine and Public Health detailed that out of 63,000 most folks spend 56 hours a week sitting down, whether it’s in front of the computer screen, TV, or video games. Sadly, it showed that women tend to be even less active than men.

Some of us feel that we have an active lifestyle but the data shows we expend most of our days sitting. By sitting we are escalating our chances of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Because of how much we sit, doctors are probing inactive physiology which looks at the effects of sitting so much.

Formerly, everyone had active lifestyles. They had to accomplish a lot of things. Today we own labor-saving devices that give us more free time - and we spend it lazing about. “Electronic living has all but sapped every glimmer of movement from our daily lives” stated James Levine M.D., Ph.D., of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

You can accomplish almost anything without ever standing up. But the problem is when you sit for extended periods of time your metabolism starts to become sluggish and shut down. When we don’t move, our muscles tighten and our circulation slows, which which leads to fewer burned calories. The enzymes that assist us in burning fat quit functioning if they aren’t in use and by sitting the whole day our fat converters drop by 50 percent.

In addition the less you move the less blood sugar your body expends. Specialists have examined and noted that the chances of getting diabetes rise 7 percent for every two hours spent on your backside. Your chance of heart disease increases as well because the enzymes are inactive. And you’re also more apt to develop depression.

The more exercise and movement your body receives the healthier you’ll be. Even if you sit in a cublicle all day take breaks such as walking to a colleague’s office instead of emailing, or volunteer to run errands for the company. And instead of having a huge water bottle at your desk take a cup and then refill it. The more activity the better. And it might just protect your life.
