Get Over Social Anxiety Troubles With These 5 Tips

Social anxiety is widespread problem that affects the health of millions of people all round the world. There are lots of causes, but most people can overcome social anxiety without resorting to professional counseling.

Don't think you are the only one who worries, feels nervous and concerned, has particular fears, and awkward when meeting people. To a certain degree, feeling anxious is a good thing as it enables the body to respond to particular stimuli and take relevant action on it. Just as long as the feeling is relative to the situation or problem you are experiencing, it is quite normal. Nevertheless, when anxiousness becomes severe, long-term and irrational, you might already have an anxiety disorder and experience episodes of anxiety attacks.

If you have social anxiety, the effects can be most distressing. You may feel isolated, ill at ease or edgy in group circumstances and may even experience physical symptoms as well. Some people get sweaty palms, shaking hands or feel discomfort or nausea in the stomach. There are several constructive steps you can take on your own that may help in subduing social anxiety.

Now let's look at five methods that can assist you to overcome anxiety.

If you don't feel very comfortable with meeting people then why not try a virtual setting, in other words, go online. Let's say you have a hobby that you love. You will probably find numerous message boards and forums dedicated to these topics.

It's a simple matter to use a search engine to find them online. Check them out and get a feel of how they operate.

See if you can find a friendly group of people that you feel you will be comfortable with. Now you need to join the forum or message board to participate in the discussions going on there. You might feel nervous about it but the first step to overcoming social anxiety is to socialize.

You will still be associating with other people, even though you're not face-to-face

But this is just the beginning! Once you have grown comfortable in this online group, now it's time to enlarge your horizons. Your virtual interaction has proved that you are entertaining to other people and know how to make friends.

To overcome social anxiety you have to recognize that you have a contribution to make and are an individual in your own right.

Join a live support group in your local area. When you go to your meeting, simply imagine that the participants are people just like you and the group leader knows just how to draw people out and put the at ease.

When you feel at ease in your group of acquaintances, invite one or two fellow members with whom you have grown a friendship out for coffee or a walk in the park. You'll soon discover it's not nearly as scary as you once supposed. You may even find yourself enjoying being in the company of others and being completely at ease with them.

Now for perhaps the biggest step in overcoming your social anxiety: host a lunch or dinner party in your home. There's no need to invite lots of people, just a few people will do. By now, your confidence should have grown. No more sweaty palms or nervousness at the idea of such an event. You've got enough practise in successfully interacting socially to do this.

Finally, make sure you keep a diary of each of these steps on the path to overcoming social anxiety. Jot down your thoughts, list all the positive exchanges and things that people seem to like about you. Trust me, the list may become long. Your journal could well become a precious keepsake of your successful journey at overcoming anxiety.
