Finding a Breed for Every Person

By: William Schmitz

So that he can help a poodle fulfill its maternal instincts, there was a dog psychologist who prescribed a box turtle. But who takes his work so seriously that he had written a book called understanding your dog. Animals are individuals too and this is according to the book of this doctor who is both an associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo. Usually, he expresses himself honestly even if people do presume too much sometimes.

He talked about a young couple with a dog wherein the dog did not let the husband enter the bedroom at times. Whenever they fought, the dachshund owned by the couple would have a catatonic fit and this was mentioned in his book. The body language of dogs is similar to humans as he says and they usually develop like young children. In addition, he also says that like humans dogs tolerate closeness differently.

If you are considering to get a puppy, it is best to get one between six and eight weeks old since dogs develop through several stages as the doctor points out. When it was raised, there should have been a lot of people around and if not you should avoid getting a puppy older than 10 weeks. A dog's interaction with other puppies is something you should take note of before buying a dog. The most aggressive dog is usually the one which is most outgoing.

After investigating it, see if he will play a game of tug of war with an old scarf or a glove that you brought. It is rather pointless for discipline training to be done if a puppy is at five or six weeks since he will forget it but what is useful is giving him some tender loving care and exposing him to a number of experiences that enriches his environment.

According to him, there is a sensitive fear period at eight weeks wherein an owner should not cause any undue trauma to his puppy and this includes a visit to the vet. By 12 weeks, he says a dog is emotionally bonded to his owner, so discipline training then is not likely to break his spirit or attachment. For different people, this doctor who holds a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university has a number of varying suggestions for dog breeds to consider.

It is a wise idea to get a golden retriever considering a family with children in the house, the company of terriers will be enjoyed by young couples, apartment couples however will be happy with a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle, older couples will love a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug. Based on the breed, it is not as easy to tell the temperament of a dog than in the past, he said. Considering this, he puts the blame on less quality in breeding.

There are dog breeders who make a joint effort in changing the standards of breed and he calls them cranks. According to him, people should not change standards without knowledge of the possible results. Before they are named the best in the breed, there is much emphasis on hoe prize dogs should first be subjected to tests. If you do this, you will know that the winner was the rightful one.
