Everything You Need To Know About The More Common Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

By: Sean Reynolds

This may sound incredible, but most child-bearing women have ovarian cysts and / or have experienced having one at least once in their lives. Despite the seemingly alarming label, having this medical condition is considered normal and many cases eventually pans out on its own without the need for medications or any type of surgical intervention. The very fact is: most women do not even know that they already have ovarian cysts simply because the symptoms are very mild or almost non-existent. It is only when relentless pain caused by complications that women are finally alerted that something might be wrong, and that medical aid is needed.

Cases are considered mild when the cysts are small (smaller than a pea,) benign (non-cancerous) and are predicted to dissolve away after 3 to 4 menstrual cycles. This can be ascertained by routine pelvic exams, CAT scans and ultrasound sessions.

On the other hand, cysts can grow to the size of a medium sized orange. And one of the most common ovarian cyst symptoms a person can experience is discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen or somewhere within the pelvic region. Depending on the actual size of the cyst, its location, and the current health of the woman, the discomfort may be bearable, flares up only occasionally, or may be a continuous stab of searing pain.

Other known ovarian cyst symptoms are: abdominal or pelvic pains especially after physical sexual union, backaches, bloating, frequent urination, irregular / heavier / painful discharges during menstruation, pelvic or vaginal pain during bowel movement, and swelling in the lower abdomen (usually on only one side.) In some rare cases, women who have large cysts on their ovaries tend to notice more body and facial hair growth, and a sudden but heavy breakout of acne. This is due to an imbalance of hormone level caused by the sudden blockage of the female sex cell from the gonads.

Other ovarian cyst symptoms may be experienced when complications such as bursting, cancer and torsion arise. Bursting happens when parts of the cyst's sac wall breaks down, sending its materials into the other parts of the body. This causes severe and sudden pain mostly in the lower abdomen and down the thighs and legs. Bursting can even turn for the worst when the cyst does not stop bleeding and eventually opens itself up to infection.

Ovarian cancer can likewise develop from a complicated case. Here, surgical intervention, a cocktail of drugs and hospitalization are needed to control the situation. As a rule, very few women suffer from cancerous cysts in the ovaries; but those who do must undergo repetitive check ups to ensure that no other cysts develop. Cancerous ovarian cysts can return time and time again.

Cyst torsion happens when the stem of the sac (where the cyst is connected to the tissue lining) becomes twisted and cuts off the blood supply to the protrusion. Sharp jabs of pain in the pelvis are usually its most common symptom.
