By: Mark Anthony

In the Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, the organ that is affected is the colon, or large intestine, the place where the body through the digestive system sends the residuals that form the stools before eliminating them.

Since this condition is termed to as syndrome, it is characterized with various symptoms for which the root causes are not known.

Although it is relatively prevalent among Americans, there is still no crucial evidence found that would help produce effective treatments. Lack of research is often thought of as the main reason why there is not enough knowledge concerning Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

For a condition to qualify for research, it must be a life threatening one, to grab the attention. But because Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not a life threatening condition for the patients, it is not included on the main study list. Furthermore, this condition being a disorder makes it more complicated to find a clear way of treatment.

Usually when we speak about a functional disorder we think about a subjective feelings and signs which can be measured. For example the pain, there is no damage to be correlated with the pain in Irritable Bowel Syndrome like in ulcer, where there is damage in the intestines that can be seen.

Being a functional disorder, there can be no physical manifestations of the disorder since everything lies in the abnormality of functions covered by the digestive system itself, more specifically the colon. With Irritable Bowel Syndrome in kids as well as in adults, the colon muscles and nerves are extra sensitive which means that any substance that can't be tolerated by the muscles may cause adverse effects on the system itself.

The main cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not known also because this condition has different manifestations among patients. There are patients that have diarrhea-dominated Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other who have constipation-dominated IBS. It is advisable to study these individually.

Although the IBS is found usually in grownups older than 20 years, it can also affect kids. But in kids the symptoms are milder and number and degree of the symptoms is reduced. It is common to consider that a child has Irritable Bowel Syndrome as soon as the child has diarrhea or constipation in a more aggravated form. That is why a doctor has to be consulted whenever are detected symptoms related to IBS.

The two basic signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome amid kids are constipation and diarrhea (or an alternation of both) and crampy pain inside the abdominal part.

Diarrhea is the abrupt alteration of the bowel movements frequency. Usually, there is also present a powerful urge to eliminate stool, which normally leads to incontinence. We can characterize diarrhea as fluid stool, which in theory should be easier to evacuate. Halfway evacuation could additionally be felt and it is necessary to eliminate right away after the first bowel movement.

In such a situation, the parents have the duty to supervise the situation to put aside all the possible complications. Diarrhea might have the effect of losing the fluid of the body. Seeking medical advice is the right thing to do when this happens.

Constipation, on the other hand, is the condition wherein there is a compaction of stool, which means that the stool is too hard to pass through the anus. The immediate treatment is to add extra amount of dietary fiber in the food to add bulk to the stool. If this is the primary sign for Irritable Bowel Syndrome in your child, it is best to check if he has skipped bowel movements in the last several days.

You need not be fearful of irritable bowel syndrome in your child. It does not post direct threat to the general health of your kid since it is a chronic condition. However, to avoid aggravated discomfort, it is best that he is treated earlier.
