By: Mark Anthony

In the Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, the organ that is affected is the colon, or large intestine, the place where the body through the digestive system sends the residuals that form the stools before eliminating them.

A disorder like this condition is characterized by several signs or symptoms for which the fundamental cause is not known specifically.

Albeit it is widely affecting the Americans, definitive scientific proofs do not exist, so there is no effective way of treatment. One of the main reasons for which there is not enough information on irritable bowel syndrome is the absence of research.

In the research industry, only those life-threatening conditions often received immediate attention. Since Irritable Bowel syndrome is a chronic condition and does not pose threats to the life of the patient, it is set off for later research. Add to this the fact that this condition is a functional disorder which further complicates the lack of viable treatment.

Functional disorder is often associated with subjective sensations and symptoms for which quantifiable measures cannot be administered. Say for pain, there is no objective factor that can be studied for pain of irritable Bowel Syndrome unlike with painful ulcer for which damage in the tissues of the intestines can be seen.

Being a functional disorder, there can be no physical manifestations of the disorder since everything lies in the abnormality of functions covered by the digestive system itself, more specifically the colon. With Irritable Bowel Syndrome in children as well as in adults, the colon muscles and nerves are extra sensitive which means that any substance that can't be tolerated by the muscles may cause adverse effects on the system itself.

To explain why there is this lack of knowledge regarding the cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome we have to take into consideration also the several ways it is experienced by patients. We have a diarrhea-dominated Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and we have constipation-dominated IBS. For clarification these types should be studied distinctively.

Although the IBS is found usually in grownups older than 20 years, it can also affect children. But in children the symptoms are milder and number and degree of the symptoms is reduced. It is common to consider that a child has Irritable Bowel Syndrome as soon as the child has diarrhea or constipation in a more aggravated form. That is why a doctor has to be consulted whenever are detected symptoms related to IBS.

Constipation and diarrhea are the two common symptoms in IBS when we speak about kids (or a mixture of these two) and additionally crampy feeling in the abdomen.

Diarrhea is the rapid modification of the frequency of bowel movements. Regularly, this is characterized by a strong urge to eliminate the stool and that facilitates incontinence. Diarrhea is additionally characterized by moist stools, which should be evacuated more easily. The patient can feel an incomplete evacuation being necessary expulsion right after the first bowel movement.

Because of that, parents are called to help the children in order to eliminate problems. Dehydration can also be the effect of diarrhea, the body losing a lot of water. As soon as you notice such effects you should visit a doctor.

However, constipation means the stool is compact and hard to eliminate through the anus. Doctors usually recommend in these situations dietary fiber to be added in the diet to add bulk to the stool. In case this is the main symptom for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, you should check to see if the child has omitted any bowel movements during the last days.

You need not be fearful of irritable bowel syndrome in your child. It does not post direct threat to the general health of your kid since it is a chronic condition. However, to avoid aggravated discomfort, it is best that he is treated earlier.
