Could E-Ink Help Reduce Landfill Volume Everywhere?

By: Justin Young

E-ink is one of the more interesting technologies that are slowly making its way into consumer products and consumer consciousness. E-ink is a nifty creation where “electronic ink” is created, thanks to a special material that can change its shape where small amounts of electricity are applied to it. The results are pretty impressive, yielding electronic devices that can actually take the place of books, news papers, and magazines.

E-ink is still emerging out of its infancy, but it has already shown enormous potential. Imagine replacing all the books that you buy and all the magazines you read with an e-reader! Just take a moment to consider all the trees that would be saved and the energy that would not be expended if you were too switch to e-readers and e-ink. This point underscores the potential of this new technology to benefit our planet.

A different form of reader technology is growing of course with the use of the ipad as well. Many people have adopted the tiny little wonder in search of unlimited books at ones disposal. Where E-ink differs from the ipad is it's uncanny ability to replicate the look and feel of a book or newspaper. Where as with the ipad there is no mistake that one is using a computer.

Of course, there is also the very important of waste management. Calgary waste management has the same issues as waste management centers around the world. According to the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States, the most common material in municipal solid waste is currently paper.

However, unfortunately, not all paper products manage to get recycled. First paper is broken down into one of three categories, namely, mill broke, pre-consumer waste and post-consumer waste. Paper that can be used for recycling is called “scrap paper.”

Experts estimate that when one ton of newspaper gets recycled, it can eliminate up to 3 cubic meters of landfill space. The good news is that in recent years, recycling has received a great deal of attention, but there is still enormous room for improvement. A modest to wide scale adoption of e-ink and e-readers means that there will be less paper put into use. That means less waste would be making its way into our landfills.

Considering that e-ink and e-readers save trees, energy and recycling costs, it is little wonder that companies, such as Amazon, Sony and Barnes & Noble, have produced e-readers for the consumer market. Expect to see this planet changing technology gain momentum in the coming years.
