Choosing to Raise Chicks

The time to get chickens is in the Spring. If you are in a hurry to get some fresh eggs then you may want to purchase pullets. You can find pullets at your local feed store. Pullets are young hens getting read to lay eggs. With pullets you will have fresh eggs fast.
Many people prefer to purchase chicks over pullets. Chicks can be purchased online from great hatcheries like Murray McMurray. If you choose to purchase chicks online or through a catalog, chicks will be mailed to your house. Chicks are normally ordered a few months before spring. By placing an order for chicks online, you will be able to get a large variety of different breeds. You will end up with a very colorful selection, which is always fun. If you are wanting blue or green eggs you can order chicks like an Americana or if you want dark chocolate colored eggs, order Marans. You can choose from full sized chickens or much small bantams. You can also choose if you want a "straight run" which is both male and females, "males only" which are just that male chicks only, or "females only" and you will only get hens.
After your order is placed you will be given a delivery date. It's very important you be home one this day. Early that morning you will get a phone call from the post office and will be able to hear "cheeping" in the background. You'll have to drive down to the post office and pick up your chicks.
Chicks are more work than pullets but the work is so rewarding, especially if you have children. Raising chicks is a wonderful experience.
