Cherrypal - Another $100 Netbook Computer?

There have been numerous cost effective notebook projects which were created or in progress primarily devoted to third world countries. There is the One Laptop Per Child project that includes an affordable, low energy laptop computer focused on children as well as their education which has been relatively effective. A new netbook computer is on its way out called the Cherrypal which is designed to cost $100 targeted largely at selling to Africa.

Often times those $100 laptops and netbooks failed at their price point. The $100 quickly turns into near twice the price once reality sets in. But when you have got commercial netbook computers as cheap as $150 right now, a lower power model can realistically hit the price point of $100.

This Cherrypal wouldn't be capable to run large computer apps, even so it is going to get the job done. Although it only has a 400 megahertz processor and 256 megabytes of ram, this is plenty to run numerous version of Linux distributions.

Regardless of what operating system preference that is made, it would be best to select a version of Linux which runs Fluxbox or XFCE as these interfaces don't take much resources to run which results in more ram and processing power for applications. Tapping into the tens of thousands of Linux applications provides developing countries zero cost software a lot of which are academic in nature.

Realistically if people in those places can get hold of a netbook such as the Cherrypal along with access to the internet it will open a world of educational and business opportunities. There are plenty of educational tools that may be available on quite a few web sites that could develop into course for students that otherwise would have cost hundreds of dollars every year in which a single netbook like this can provide everything.

Hopefully the $100 price point stays since it would give people access to the technology particularly for the educational benefits from this type of equipment.
