Champion runner will soon become medical doctor

By: Clyde Balsh

A bright, hopeful lass arrived in this small town back in 1984 with big dreams to become a champion runner and Olympic medalist. In four short years, her greenish brown eyes have seen it all. In 1988, she finished sixth in the 3,000 meter run in the Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Finally this young world class runner finished her studies in her local high school last December. At age 23, she is considered the next queen of American middle distance running, has signed a three year deal to run for a well known shoe manufacturer.

But then she chose to remain here right in Delaware for now. She courses the environs of the campus during her regular workout activities. This stunning young runner stands 5 foot 6 and weighs 110 pounds but as she runs to her own finish line, it's as if her feet barely touch the ground. Being flung into fame and during times when people ask for her autograph, she becomes very fidgety. She is such a humble young girl who claims to be a normal person she gets bothered when she gets special treatment.

As normal as she is, she is certainly not average. She was the first girl from their town to ever get the chance to compete in the Olympics. She is part of seven world record relay teams and also hands her hands on four American collegiate awards. Because of her invaluable prowess as an athletic leader, their school brought home 14 prestigious title wins during the Big East finals along with 8 individual honors during the NCAA championship. The highest distinctions also were achieved by her.

Now that she has already graduated from collegiate competitions, she has begun planning her sports career with the help of her track coach. With this big leap comes the need for changing a lot of her mentalities. Unless people have already experienced it, it would be hard for them to understand. The pressure she feels to be a successful runner are mostly placed on her by her own self. She worries about getting injured while under contract for this famous shoe manufacturer. With more eyes on her now expecting a lot from her, she has become nervous than how she was during her collegiate sports days.

Without her, people wonder how the local women's track team can go on. Of course they will be fine for they are a superb team, she shares. She values her privacy and wants to protect herself from the notoriety, pressures and responsibilities in her life. Even her brother, sister and parents had to adjust to the fact that people know them too so they have to accept some adjustments. Though her parents were supportive, they were never pushy for they were also laid back.

With her stardom comes the positive trait which is the company she keeps. The elite groups of athletes we look up to and watch on TV are her friends. She does sound out names but not out of conceit but out of genuine affection toward these people whom she has common ties with. A good example would be this during her return from Hawaii in June where she went on tour with another runner, she shares that the last time she had since him was way back during the time they both competed in the Olympics. They talked about the old times and just had fun for three days and she was happy about it.

She shares that she bears with an excessive amount of time but she still hasn't trimmed down her list of stuff to be done. Beyond this celebrated athlete's daily practices, she also finds herself busy with gracing social affairs like track meets, banquets and even photo sessions, features and all that come with being a public figure. She also said that she will offer some of her time and talent by volunteering as a coach assistant at the local school.

In keeping up with the medical aspiration she has put on hold, she also aims to volunteer on one of the area hospitals. Indeed, being a volunteer there can truly assist this former psychology and premed major in knowing whether to continue with medicine when she is finished with professional running. How does she see herself a few years from now? While she wants to have a happy family of her own, she shares that it will have to wait until she has become an established runner. But for now, she shares that she wants to reach her goals and wants.
