Certification? Bah Humbug!

I simply read a piece of writing regarding certification and it blew me away. It absolutely was pretty sensible! I used to be impressed BUT.
Here is the fact. Company America does not care about certification at least for networks or computers. It cares when it involves SOX or CPAs and even project manager certification.
However a network? Or laptop certification? Provide me a break.
I do not mean to rain on your Christmas Parade but this is true. Certification means that zero in the corporate world. Currently, I have zero facts or proof to prove my theory. However that's enough.
Assume about these questions from a Managers perspective.
1. How will it benefit the bottom line?
2. Can we tend to see a make the most of it?
3. Can this create my coaching budget go out the ceiling?
4. How long can the certified person keep with the corporate?
5. Is that the person being certified qualified?
6. Do we tend to as manager really understand the certification process?
(there are more however I might not think of them this late in the dark)
Query one: Certification can do nothing to boost the bottom line. Period. Sorry however that's the honest to gosh truth.
Query two: See a Profit? Please. Certification is an expensive use of coaching dollars. I will assume of higher uses for that money than sending it to Brother Bill (a.k.a. Microsoft).
Question three: Training Budget...hahahahaha.... When things get tough you will see this line item get the axe first. It always does. An excessive amount of history supporting this.
Question 4: Good question. Management will place restrictions on an individual for getting this coaching like "You will have to stay with the corporate for 5 years if we tend to try this for you!". And then they don't provide you tight raises throughout that time period; that's classic - I hope you saw that returning friend.
Query 5: This is a good one. This company paid to urge the computer geek certified and guess what? He was an idiot. Could not tie his shoes or take regular bathes. After all, if he came to figure on your pc he would sit there and change all of the setting on the computer back to their default settings. The REAL support people never had a likelihood to induce that training as a result of they might not leave their job due to their importance level but he could go! WOW. True story.
Query six: ABSOLUTELY NOT! For you managers or perhaps Senior Managers reading this simply GOTO to the MANAGERS START READING HERE AGAIN section and do not finish this question. I might venture to mention that these kinds of leaders want certifying themselves to determine if they're qualified to lead as managers. Just like we all know there is a crowd of during this world that need to be tested to become parents.
Currently I am not saying all managers work this mold but the bulk do. Of course the ignorance of this group makes the nice ones look bad. I had this Sr. Manager once that promised me that certification would be approved for all of my staff. I was to arrange my budget and submit it. At the primary budget meeting at that senior level our coaching was the first area that got the axe; all 100 p.c of it. The excuse, well we have a tendency to are sensible individuals we will figure this tech stuff out while not the classes. When all, we have a tendency to are the geeks.
I even had another boss that believed training was worthless as a result of of the same reason. He felt that I used to be smarter than what the category would teach me and he felt that on the job training was of bigger importance. Needless to say, my salary was cut thanks to his ignorance of computers and networks.
MANAGERS START READING HERE AGAIN.
Thus why the downer spirit on Certification?
It's very like the nursing field. They have certification but Microsoft will not run it or control it. CPAs do not have to worry about some other for-profit organization telling them what to test and a way to test.
However you see, Microsoft does. In their infinite wisdom, they assume they understand more regarding what's needed for certification than us geeks. From a technical perspective maybe they do however certainly not from an application standpoint.
What if Client Reports was run by General Motors or Ford or perhaps Pepsi? It would not be done right.
You see certification needs to be INDEPENDENT. Why? Have you ever not been reading this article? Microsoft desires to yield and this trade wants to select up the slack before the techno idiots take it from us.
If you actually want to urge certified then I say do it. However be smart in getting this cert. Get something that can kick butt.
A couple come to mind; CISSP, GIAC and Cisco features a Skilled grade as well.
These are well considered the simplest and you may rake in the dollars with these tags on your name.
As way as MCSE is concerned or whatever Microsoft is asking it; I can expire them. I have been burned too several times by management trying to get it and I have had to fix too many screws-up's caused by MCSE certified professionals.
Keep in mind, we tend to as true professional ought to management the industry not some massive corporation with zero experience in an exceedingly true operating environment. My last point I can create is this. Too several times within the training category the teacher will say "You'll would like to understand this answer for the check! However in the $64000 world we have a tendency to don't do this technique this way. Microsoft desires corporate America to do this their way."
Therefore now you recognize where my Bah Humbug is directed. Towards a Microsoft controlled certification process. Our trade wants INDEPENDENCE.
