Call Center Health Concerns

By: Ivana Lewis

The question of health is irrevocably linked with the call center industry. There are reasons why it is so, of course. Any non-BPO person can just take a glance at the life led by the agents working in call centers and pass the verdict that they need to take care of their health. However, being immersed in work as they are, these telemarketing agents continue to ignore the symptoms and the warning bells as they push harder up the corporate ladder. But you cannot keep doing that and get away with it. The body can take this much and no more. That’s when the answering service agents feel the fatigue and realize that they are heading towards a burnout.

Here’s a handy checklist that can help call center agents to get back before they go over the cliff:

1. Eat healthy. As a BPO agent, you are prone to eat junk and fast food. You are more open to peers having caffeine, cigarettes and even alcohol. That may give you the distorted notion that the way to relieve stress is through these means. Actually it is not so. Answering service agents are on the floor for long stretches of time. You need nutritious food to see you through. You need proper food so that your digestive system stays in shape despite the graveyard shifts and lack of rest. Telemarketing agents often develop digestive problems because of their terrible food habits.

2. Proper sleep is something that every human being needs, and more so hardworking call center agents. It’s true that they cannot get their standard 8 hours of sleep because of the shifts they work in. So they have to take extra precautions to make time out for regular, undisturbed sleep. Sleep is also important to get back to the call centers with renewed energy. You have to rest your body to make a significant and continued contribution to the business process outsourcing firm you are working in.

3. Exercise, as we all know, helps immensely. In addition to exercise, the call center agents can try meditation and other yoga trainings to help them combat mental stress. BPO firms can play a role here. They can arrange for a weekly session in the call centers where the agents can meditate and do something to unwind. It has helped many corporate houses across the globe. The advantage of these sessions is to flush out the mental toxins and help the telemarketing services agents to do their work without a hangover.

4. This draws from the previous point. Playing a sport that requires physical activity helps professionals. Be it basketball or volleyball, call center agents can enroll for games at clubs or organize something between themselves on a regular basis. Exercise and physical activity generates endomorphins in the body, a hormone that makes you feel good about life. That’s something that BPO agents need badly. That’s not because they don’t like BPO service; that’s because they need these to continue working in this sector as long as they want without any health worries.
