Alan Wake: a game that was worth the wait

By: SJP Babrevian

Alan Wake, the main character of this game, is a successful author who struggles with writer’s block. Alan and his wife go to a small town called Bright Falls, looking for new inspiration. The story takes a bizarre twist when Alice suddenly disappears, and Alan finds himself caught up in a series of sinister happenings. The story is revealed via different episodes, each time adding another piece of the puzzle to complete the tale. The game recaps the story at the start of every new episode to allow the player to easily follow the story.
While searching for his wife, Alan stumbles upon pages of a manuscript which appears to be inexplicably written by him. These pages either reveals things that has happened, or will happen soon, but Alan does not know which. The game focuses on finding and collecting the manuscript, as instructions and warnings for the rest of the game, are contain within its pages. Bright Falls is the perfect setting, creating the perfect eerie atmosphere to enhance the suspense and mystery. Day and night interplays to build and transform the atmosphere as the game progress.
Surviving is not simply shooting your way through the enemy, but also making effective and intelligent use of light and dark. The enemy is called “the Taken” and being extremely light sensitive, Alan’s most effective way of combating them is via a torch and other light sources. The player feels constantly in danger, and every time darkness approaches, a feeling of dread creeps over you. Battling “the Taken” means the game does not offer much variance in terms of battles, but it makes up for that by very carefully planned and executed battles. In a game like this, opting to allow the player complete freedom to roam could cause the game to lose its focus. That is perhaps the reason why the developers rather chose a more linear approach. The excellent storyline does hide this and the player never feels as if his freedom is restricted. The game will not only be remembered for its game play, but especially for its story. A surprising conclusion leaves you with no doubt that this game was worth playing. This game is worth at least 90%.
