A review of Red Dead Redemption

By: SJP Babrevian

Set against the backdrop of the Wild West of 1911, Red Dead Redemption offers and interesing peep into a world long gone. The successor to Red Dead Revolver, which was released in 2004. Rockstar Games released this game for the PC, PS3 and Xbox platforms. Violence and excitement are integral parts of the world of Red Dead Redemption. the world is vast; stretching for miles upon miles, it creates a wonderful open game. You are free do do almost anything, like galloping unto a mountain and watching the sun set. Although, it must be said, that this method of travel can become a pain later in the game. the story centres around John Marstons. a former bad guy, he is now forced by the government to bring down his former gang members. The government took his wife and son to force him to find his former comrades and bring them in. The openness of the game offers various possiblities to accomplish this.

Unexpected surprises during your long journeys across this world is one of the games more interesting features. You can suddenly be attacked by wild animals or robbers, or you could stumble upon someone in need. Deciding if you are going to ignore them, or help them is entirely up to you. Your character might even take part in events like public hangings, or shooting people for coming into town and firing their guns in the air. Interestingly enough you are rewarded for this act.

Included in the game is a few mindless distractions. These include gambling, hunting and a good Wild West standoff. There are even different types of horse breeds available to choose from during the game.

While traveling in the open land, the game offers quite a lot small gunfights, but the real treat is managing to get into one of those real big gunfights. With bullets ricocheting all around you, your fire your six shooter at everything that moves. Dead Eye Targeting is the highlight of this game. Similiar to bullet-time in the Matrix, this feature never gets old. Aiming the perfect shot is easier with this feature that slows down time to give you more opportunity. When the Dead Eye Targeting ends, Marston will at these points in rapid succession. Adding a nice fun factor to the game, this feature is great.

The game allows you to choose whether you want to be a good guy or a bad guy. Good guys tend to shed less blood, opting for the friendlier option of shooting the guns out of enemies’ hands, targeting certain body parts to take them out without killing them and lassoing them with a rope. Being bad, of course, mean massacring everyone in sight. Unfortunately, the scoring system for this is not perfect. In this game personal preference will determine if you are the hero or an outlaw. The people you meet during the game react to you differently depending on your morality score.

I was unable to test the multiplayer part of this game. I really enjoyed this game and there is very little that annoys. The graphics are very good and the scenery is convincing, but my biggest gripe with the game is that traveling become tiresome, but then again, the Wild West was a very big and lonely place to ride in. I will give it a solid 9 out of 10.
