3 Possible Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms

By: Nydia Rojas

Mesothelioma if a form of cancer that affects the lining of the heart, lungs and abdomen. Mesothelioma is one of the less common types of cancer affecting around 2000 people in the UK each year. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, which is called the pleura. In this article I will be outlining three potential symptoms for this type of cancer and discussing the steps you should take if you notice any of these.
The parts that can develop mesothelioma cancer can be divided to three parts, the first and the most common part is the Pleura or the outer membrane of lungs. The visceral is the inner layer while the parietal is the outer. In between them is lubricating fluid to help the two layers slide over each other as our lungs contract and expand for our breathing. If it develops in this area it is known as pleural mesothelioma and it causes the two layers to become thicker.
It can also lead to pleural effusion where lubricating fluid in the lungs becomes trapped between the inner and outer layers of the pleura. This can also cause discomfort from swallowing and regular coughing.
Naturally as the layers become thicker due to the growth of cancer cells and push against your lungs causing shortness of breath they can also cause chest pain because of the added pressure. Pain in shoulders can also be a symptom of lung cancer.
In between them is a lubricating fluid to help the two layers slide back and forth over each other. ASCITES:- As the inner and outer layers of the peritoneum become thicker, lubricating fluid can become trapped in this area. When the build up occurs, it is referred to as a pleural effusion. This can result in the pleural mesothelioma symptoms; difficulty breathing and chest pain.
When you notice the symptoms of mesothelioma in your body, the place you go to is to see the doctor who can then run the various tests to confirm the diagnosis. Upon seeing your doctor you should inform them of the symptoms you have experienced and also tell them if you have previously been in contact with asbestos. This, combined with the lack of an accurate history of asbestos exposure in some patients, may considerably delay diagnosis. After presenting him/her with your symptoms and signs, your doctor may perform any number of tests, including CAT scans, X-Rays, or an MRI. These results suggest that mesothelioma may have a strong link to VEGF, and thus may be more responsive to treatments which target VEGF.
Mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, is one of the rare type of lung cancers, with around 2,000 new cases being registered in the United States annually. No one wants to be diagnosed with a condition like this but it can be treated. Late stage signs are: with epidermoid and small cell carcinoma; smokers cough, hoarseness, wheezing, dyspnea, hemoptysis and chest pain. If you notice any of these symptoms you should go see your doctor right away and explain your concerns.
